TIM KLIPHUIS TRIO JAZZ CONCERT

Top Jazz at Cairndow
Much of the Cowalfest programme focuses, quite rightly, on the ‘Story of Cowal’, but Cairndow Arts Promotions are bringing an international flavour to the musical side of the festival, so if you tired after long walks, or would enjoy foot tapping as your afternoon exercise, we have just the concert for you.
Dutch swing fiddler Tim Kliphuis, top Scottish guitarist Nigel Clark and bass player Roy Percy play Stéphane Grappelli's favourite music in swing style with added folky and classical influences. Kliphuis is considered as one of the world’s leading jazz violinists. His style and spirit closely resemble Grappelli, but with an ‘ astonishingly fluid versatility’ (Time Out)
His concerts have spanned the globe, including such events as Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scott's (London) and Iridium Jazz Club (NYC), as well as classical venues such as the Richard Strauss Festival in Germany. Since 2004 Kliphuis has performed his Tribute to Grappelli over a hundred times at festivals across the world, and has been hailed as the successor of the great jazz violin master. Although he can sound uncannily like Grapelli, this is no slavish replication. He approaches a broad range of music with his own individual musical voice.
Jazz violinists have always been thin on the ground, and with good reason. This is not an instrument for bluffers. Accurate technique is vital, and Kliphuis goes out of his way out of his to remind us of his classical training.
His concerts and cds have been widely praised. His last tour of the UK was a sell out with The Scotsman commenting: ‘No scrapes, no squeals, every note was bowling-ball smooth, played with a verve that was light of heart and full of individual character. A charming, uplifting performance from a future great. Check him out.’, and Time Out adding: ‘ He plays with an astonishing fluid versatility.’ The Herald was equally enthusiastic: ‘Kliphuis served up numerous unexpected delights’.
The all string trio playing at this Cowalfest concert include Nigel Clarke on guitar: ‘An imaginative and highly individual amalgamation of jazz and various contemporary idioms. This is common practice nowadays, but rarely done with such wit or technical accomplishment. Clark's guitar playing is exceptional’ (The Observer) and Roy Percy on bass who plays with the group ‘Swing 2006’ who are considered ‘Something of an institution in Scottish jazz’ (The Scotsman)
The Tim Kliphuis Trio are in concert on Sunday 14th October at 3.00 p.m. at Cairndow Village Hall. Concert has been arranged by Cairndow Arts Promotions in association with Lochgoilhead Fiddle Workshop. Adults £7.00, children under 16 FREE.
