CELTIC MUSIC RADIO COMES TO COWAL
Celtic Music Radio was originally granted a restricted licence to cover the Glasgow Celtic Connections Festival in 2006, but this has now been extended to a full AM frequency which can be heard in and around Glasgow.
Celtic Music Radio has established itself as a strong cultural voice for contemporary and traditional Scottish music and song, pioneering new frontiers in communication and broadcasting by including people who cannot gain access to mainstream media; it is also focussing on appealing to minority organisations which promote Gaelic arts and culture in Glasgow.
The service aims to advance education, in particular by promoting the performance, learning and appreciation of a broad spectrum of Celtic music, and to enhance the understanding of this genre of music and be pro-active in the development of the rich heritage of Celtic music. Celtic Radio can also be accessed on line for those people outside the Glasgow transmission area at www.celticmusicradio.net
Celric Music Radio covers the main festivals and events in Glasgow, but they have taken the unusual step of coming to Cowal for two key outside broadcasts. Ross Macfadyen, of Celtic Music Radio explains: ‘ When we interviewed Lochgoilhead Fiddle Workshop during Celtic Connections we were amazed that a group outside the central belt and outside what is generally thought of a the geographical mainstream of traditional music had built up such an extensive programme of concerts. They have managed a great mixture of international stars with home-grown and up- and-coming talent.’ Celtic Music Radio recorded last weekend’s concert with Bruce Molsky and Bellevue Rendezvous at Strachur Memorial Hall, and will record an evening of Gaelic and Scots song, supported by Western Ferries, that is being put on at the Burgh Hall, Dunoon on 6th May, including the multi- award winning singer Emily Smith More details on www.fiddlefolk.co.uk.
Celtic Music Radio has also expanded Cowal’s exposure to wide- ranging Celtic folk music by going into partnership with Dunoon Community Radio. Victor Thomas, of Dunoon Community Radio says: ‘From established artistes to young unknowns, from traditional to contemporary it would be hard not to find something to take your fancy. Celtic Music Radio provides us with our day time service, and the combination of that with Lochgoilhead’s FiddleFolk’s live concerts means that Dunoon and Cowal now has a wider choice of listening than ever before.’
Celtic Radio is on 1530AM; Dunoon Community Radio 97.4FM Dunoon Community Radio broadcasts its own local programmes from 6.00 to 10.p.m. daily. You can also listen to DCR’s own programmes on line via the Dunoon Observer’s web site www.dunoon-observer.com
